This painting was requested by my dad for his book. It illustrates a slightly idealized (or rather, simplified) and fantastical version of mining techniques and glass making with gemstones. Obviously, glass made out of gemstones in real life is called obsidian and erupts out of volcanoes, and people don’t normally manufacture it. Glass we use on a normal basis is clear, silica based, and the batch material is normally sand. Seeing as all glass is made in a furnace of some kind, whether it be man-made or nature-made, I thought it would be appropriate in a fantasy setting to have the furnace be dragon-shaped.
